First Years, Eleventh Project - Product Names and Branding

The first year students have been exploring the power and use of language as a central element of effective visual communication. We asked them to come up with brand names and visual identities for a range of products new to the market. The list included:

  • A chocolate and meat snack bar
  • Sun hats for cats
  • Invisible Clothing
  • Pencils that taste of fruit
Working in teams of two, the students bounced ideas off one another and helped each other refine, edit and focus their visual solutions.

The difficulty wasn't coming up with a clever name, but lay in designing a believable 'look' for their logo/mark. Target markets/audiences had to be clearly identified before the design process took place.

Here's a selection from the whole design process: brainstorming; refinement and the creation of the final piece...

What about 'A Desktop Garden'?

...or a square apple?

Recluses could require a 'social network'. Here's what it could look like...

Sunday dinner could be spiced up with a touch of 'Fluorescent Gravy'...

What about 'Pencils that taste of fruit'?

Finally, here's a small selection of final pieces...

The day that Reykjavik Academy of Visual Arts came to play

We were recently visited, all be it briefly, by students from The Reykjavik Academy of Visual Arts. Charged with both entertaining and informing them, we decided to get back to basics and do some drawing and making. It was great fun, here are the results of our afternoon.

We'd like to say a big thanks to the guys for popping in, it was a real pleasure to spend some time with you.
