wimbledon fact

Bjorn-Borg

Wimbledon starts today – Hooray! Another overblown sporting event. Can’t have enough of those.

It’s a little known fact – none of us have ever heard but Captain Simon insists it’s true – that famous tenniser Bjorn Borg had one arm longer than the other due to the ferocious power of his servicing. We didn’t believe it either until the above photograph was found offering up irrefutable proof.

Grillust Supremo Carries Torch!

Grillust™supremo Captain Simon Davies is pictured above proudly carrying the 'Olympic - Coca Cola - Samsung Flame™' to it's overnight resting place of Bitts Park, here in lovely Carlisle.

Well over fifty local residents turned out to witness this once in a lifetime experience which also included light entertainment provided by contemporary pop singer Katy B? No, we hadn't heard of her either...

The ever enthusiastic 'Captain' (who was selected for his services to knitting and stitching) decided to 'pimp' his torch by adding a 50:50 mix of bush kerosene and rubbing alcohol. This resulted in a scalding arc of flame that all those who witnessed it, will find hard to wipe from their memory even though their sight is gradually returning and facial hair will grow back in time.

The emergency services have since stood down...

The Josh Taylor Manifesto

2nd year graphic designer and cycling supremo, Josh Taylor (21), has had his personal manifesto design published on the Creative Review feed (perhaps it ought to be renamed the Grillust™feed judging by all the recent posts!)

Every graphic design student and their [virtual] dog [app] has redesigned Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto for Growth. At Grillust™ we're more interested in our own students' agendas, so we asked each of them to write and present their own manifesto.

"Stop buying shit you don't need" A sentiment we can all get behind! See more of Josh's work here

Another Grillust™ offering to the world

3rd year graphic designer, Stephen Cass (21), had one of his typographic projects featured on the Creative Review feed recently.

Designing an effective, comprehensive typographic hierarchy and being able to marshal large amounts of text into a cohesive, readable and engaging piece of work, is a skill that we in the Grillust™ empire value and encourage.

Stephens featured piece is an excellent example of that skill and understanding combined with critical attention to detail. See more of his work here

Helen Quint bids for world domination...

... or alternatively, a career in graphic design.

Helen (aka 'Squinty') has launched a massive assault on the graphic design world with a recent flurry of blog activity. As well as featuring more than once on the Creative Review Feed, Helen (21) has also had numerous projects featured on The Design Inspiration, Looks-Like-Good-Design, Abduzeedo, The Inspiration Hut and Cardonizer.

See even more of Helen's work here!

Where is the Creative Centre of the Universe?

Google only knows...

Young Creative Network 2012

Every year the Young Creative Network (YCN) organisation, along with major brands, sets a series of tough briefs. This year, two of our hard-working 3rd year students - Rachy McKenzie (21) and Ben Barrow (21) - have been commended in the Feelgood Drinks project.

Rachy McKenzie (21)

Ben Barrow (21)

Presumably both of them can't win the category, so there could be a 'rumble' at the slap-up feed in  Shoreditch Town Hall when the winners are announced in September.

In the meantime our congratulations go to Rachy and Ben. Well done, we're proud of you both!

Exhibition Private View

The exhibition private view, held on the evening ofSaturday 9th June was a great success. Friends old and new gathered to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our graduating third year students.

Here are some snaps of the evening:

Toby (21) really made an effort!

Jamie Hewlett of Gorillaz and Tank Girl fame has recently joined Twitter and uses it to post random pieces of sketchbook work. Despite his very modern output, it’s easy to see the tradition and love of illustrators such as Ronald Searle in his work.

I think Jamie’s work also shows that a solid appreciation and understanding of drawing will never go out of fashion or be superseded by technology or trend.

Interview with Matthew Carter

...the distinguished type designer infamous for his Microsoft screen fonts Verdana, Georgia, Tahoma etc. it's convenient to forget that Carter has also counts Big Caslon, ITC Galliard, Helvetica Compressed and Bell Centennial in his extensive portfolio.

Each student has customised a box to represent themselves. The results are fantastic, witty and varied.

Show 01
The custom built welcome/goodbye sign was generously created by Year 2 student Ieva Bureikaite (21) who won’t even be graduating until next year (that’s how committed our students are!)

Grillust™ Autumn Tour 2012 - Destination No.1

Blackpool Postcard

Location: Blackpool
Date: Thursday 31 May
Distance from Carlisle: 100 miles
Grillust™ Operative: Tony

We’ve started our Autumn tour a little earlier this year - well Spring actually - with our very first trip to Blackpool. The weather wasn’t too kind but the people were lovely. As ever, here are a few Blackpool fast facts:

Blackpool Fast Fact 1: The world famous ‘Blackpool Rock’ is extracted from a huge quarry in the small suburb of Poulton

Blackpool Fast Fact 2: Tower plagiarist Louis Eiffel was only inspired to create the structure that carries his name after seeing the Blackpool original, during a Wallace Arnold ‘Romance of the Fylde Coast with a day’s shopping in Preston’  package tour in 1887

Blackpool Fast Fact 3: Serial Rita botherer Alan Bradley, famously met his end under a Blackpool tram in 1989 (while being watched by 26.93 million spectators)!

Blackpool Fast Fact 4: For Fish & Chips, visit the Yorkshire Fisheries in Topping Street (yummy).

Blackpool Fast Fact 5: You should go and see the Comedy Carpet
